Why should I join the Electrical Trades Union?

By joining together we have more of a say in our working lives. With a union we can
negotiate with our employers for better wages and benefits, fair treatment, safe
working conditions and a harassment-free workplace.

These goals can be achieved because of the strength that comes from our unity.

Workers who operate under collective agreements are much better off than those who
deal directly with their bosses or who have to rely on safety net minimum requirements.

The truth is that everything we have, from hot water in the workplace to the hours of
work, was won through struggle by union members.

Services We Offer
In addition to the Industrial Services that the ETU offer their members, they also offer
a range of other services to members.
Some of the services members can access are:

  • Advice and assistance concerning your rights at work.
  • Ensure members know their entitlements.
  • Assist in the organisation of the workplace.
  • Provide representation when negotiating an Award or
  • Enterprise agreement.
  • Represent members in any counseling or disciplinary matters befor etheir employer.
  • Provide employment insurance by representing members if they are unfairly dismissed.
  • Workers compensation claims.
  • Ensure that members have been correctly paid by checking employers wages books.
  • Arrange workplace safety inspections.
  • Provide specialist legal advice.

What have unions ever done for me?
Unions are groups of workers who have joined together to help each other protect
and improve their pay and working conditions.

Many of the conditions we all take for granted have not been given to us by employers of Governments but have been won by groups of workers acting together as a union.

Conditions such as:
  • Sick Pay
  • Rostered Days Off
  • Annual Leave
  • Maternity Paternity Leave
  • Allowances, like meal allowance and electrical license allowance.
  • Overtime and Penalty Rates
  • Superannuation
  • Workers Compensation
  • Health and Safety Provisions
  • Redundancy Pay
  • Protection from Harassment and Discrimination
  • Equal Employment Opportunities
  • Classification Structures
The Union operates to safeguard and protect these conditions. If the Union were not
here then these conditions would not last.

How much will membership cost me?
Union agreements and Awards have resulted in significant wage increases for
Union members.
These increases more than cover the cost of membership, not more than a few dollars per week.

Who runs the ETU?
Members do. Members directly elect the ETU officials who represent them.

Can I get the sack for joining the ETU?
No.
The law says you can not be sacked or discriminated against for being a Union member.

Does my boss have to know I am a member of the ETU?
Your Union membership is confidential.
All contact between you, your workplace representative and the union is strictly between you and them.
You are under no obligation to tell your employer about your membership.

Workplace Safety
Every year more Australians are injured through industrial accidents than road
accidents.

A lot of the accidents occur in workplaces where there is no Union. Workplace safety is one of the Electrical Trade Unions most critical issues.

If you have concerns over the safety of your workplace call the Electrical Trades Union.

If you are injured at work the Electrical Trades Union will help your with your workers compensation claim.
